Notes on home · From Shelby’s writing
A smaller home, with room for what matters
A fresh chapter does not mean leaving your story behind.
Based on a reflection by Shelby Johnson
In a reflection shared on her Facebook page, Shelby writes about how our relationship with belongings changes over time. The pieces we spent years collecting can become gifts to another generation, while the things we love most come with us into a new chapter.
When moving into a smaller home, begin with the pieces that feel most like you: a much-loved chair, family photographs, a favorite painting, or an heirloom that carries a story. Think about the home you are moving toward and how you want to live there.
Shelby suggests choosing the furniture, artwork, and everyday essentials you want to keep before deciding what to do with what remains. It can be an emotional process, and having help can make those choices feel less overwhelming.
Her decorating work brings the pieces you have chosen into a smaller, welcoming space. The goal is a home with the familiar feeling of the one you loved, with a little more breathing room.
